When Uhuru Kenyatta and Willliam Ruto defeated all odds to become President and Deputy President respectively in 2013, they surprised many in Kenya and beyond.
The two who were then facing crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court successfully managed to rally their respective communities behind them and for the first time in many years, Kenya had peaceful polls.
As if this was not enough, the two after taking office, demystified the presidency making it look like an ordinary office. All through their first term (2013-2017), both had mutual respect to each other and even their disagreements rarely came into the limelight.
But not anymore. The cock has come home to roost and the 'house of cards' has started to crumble. Cracks are already evident between their camps inside Jubilee Party and continue to widen by day.
Though Ruto has tried to brush it off, Uhuru seemingly doesn't give a hoot about the party's internal feuds, his main focus being on the Big Four and his legacy.
As a human being, Ruto must be unhappy with Uhuru's recent behaviour though he may not show it openly. But this is not all. Here are three other things that Ruto may never forgive Uhuru for.
1. Uhuru-Raila handshake
Whatever you may want to call it, this was Uhuru's highest order of betrayal to Ruto. The fact that Uhuru struck a deal with Raila behind Ruto's back, then no amount of sweet talk can help brighten Ruto's dull feelings.
Ruto was humiliated in front of the whole country and was not even invited to witness the handshake. He was watching it on TV just like any other ordinary Kenyan. Is this how you treat your buddy surely?
2. Lifestyle audit
Just like the handshake, Uhuru once again pulled a surprise on Ruto by ordering a lifestyle audit on all state officers beginning with him and Ruto.
Clearly, Ruto was not consulted as he even protested publicly saying that he hoped that the audit was not going to end with him. Ruto's 'attack dogs' also hit back bitterly saying the audit was targeted on their boss.
3. Mau evictions
While Ruto has been keen not to be seen to take sides on the Mau issue, he must be jittery about it. This is his main political constituency that he must keep close to his chest if his dream of succeeding Uhuru is to be valid. Maybe, if it was his wish, he would have wanted the evictions delayed till after he ascends to power.
But who is Uhuru? He has insisted that the evictions must go on to Ruto's detriment. Now Ruto's rivals like Senator Gideon Moi have already found political fodder that they will use to chew Ruto with come 2022.
