Officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) have been deployed to Nepoitom village in Turkana county following the killing of a primary school teacher.
Two policers officers sustained injuries in the bandit attack.
The ground officers are expected to back the air surveillance team in a bid to nab the bandits who have been terrorising residents.
The assailants who have since gone into hiding on Wednesday shot at a police Land Cruiser which was ferrying police officers and a number of civilians along the volatile Napeitom-Lokori road in Turkana East.
Confirming the addition of the dreaded unit in the operation, Turkana County Police boss Samuel Ndanyi revealed that a multiagency team of General Service Unit (GSU), the Regular Police, Administration Police unit (AP) and the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) had been deployed to the area on Thursday evening to track down the assailants thought to be bandits from a neighbouring county.
“We suspect that the attackers are bandits who might have been in the area to steal livestock and thought they were being pursued by the AP officers and that is why they laid an ambush,” said the police boss.
The injured officers who survived the attack were airlifted to Nairobi on Wednesday night, as another police chopper made its way to the county to aid in the security operation.
