What followed was a stampede as students in the library scampered for safety.

However, unconfirmed reports suggest that a lift in the building malfunctioned and it hit the ground hard.

Morris Murimi a student who was at the library at the time said the loud bang sent shockwaves among the students.

In his own account, he narrates that he was on the third floor of the library when the loud bang rent the air.

He together with his colleagues in the building scampered for safety.

Kenyatta University Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Administration Prof Fatuma Chege in her address to the students outside the library premises said there was no cause for alarm and that the technical team was handling the issue.

She, however, advised students to stay away from the library precincts to let the technical team sort the issue.

Academic Registrar Prof Andanje Mwisuka also asked the students not to panic.
