A middle-aged man from Kiambu was on Wednesday arrested for growing bhang in Nguirubi plains, Ndeiya, Limuru.
Addressing journalists shortly after the arrest, Njoroge Mbugua claimed that God had instructed him to plant and sell the illegal herb to residents.
“Hii kazi ni yangu pekee yangu. Ata nikiwacha lakini Mungu ndio aliniambia nipande....” said Mbugua. (This is my job. God instructed me to grow the bhang.)
Reports indicate that Mbugua has been growing the bhang and selling it to residents for two years now.
Mbugua is currently being held at the Tigoni Police Station before being arraigned in court.
Confirming the incident, area sub-chief Leah Nguhi said they received a tip-off from members of the public.
Nguhi further noted that the bhang had been surrounded by thorny bushes, so as not to raise suspicion.
"Young kids in the area have also been smoking the bhang but we did not know where they were getting it from. I received a tip-off from herders following several complaints by residents," said Nguhi.
Mbugua's remarks have elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans. Here are some of their reactions:
