Cancers can be caused by various viruses which are microscopic in nature. The viruses are what make the cancerous cells grow.

Here are the types of viruses that can lead to cancer.

1. Human papillomaviruses (HPVs)

In most cases, HPV is sexually transmitted. This virus has been associated with a vast number of infections including genital warts. Regarding cancer, the virus can lead to cervical cancer which is common in women.

The virus can also lead to other cancers such as penile cancer, anal cancer, vulva and vaginal cancer.

However, not all people infected by HPV develop cancer.

2. Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus

These two viruses have been linked to liver cancer because they infest the liver. These viruses can be passed from one person to another in various ways. They are mainly transmitted through semen, blood and other bodily fluids.

Other studies reveal that the virus can promote the development of non-Hodgkin cancer.

3. Human herpes virus 8 (HHV8)

The virus can be transmitted sexually or acquired through blood transfusion. It causes tumours to proliferate at an uncontrollable rate and bring about Kaposi sarcoma. This cancer is characterized by the formation of masses in the skin, lymph nodes and other organs.
