Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama is a man under the shadows of reprieve after Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling which upheld his victory in the August 8, 2017 polls.
The handwriting was on the wall that Nyagarama would emerge victoriously. His legal team put up a good fight.
However, the biggest challenge is whether the county government of Nyamira which is ranked last in all development indices and parameters can redeem itself from the rampant corruption, clanism and nepotism which have dogged it.
Having served as the second Chairman of Senate’s Public Accounts and Investments Committee coupled by a good understanding of how county government operations work, I can say without fear of contradiction that Nyagarama is up for a huge task in cleansing both the image and operations of the county.
From over employment, shoddy works, county staff operating from neighbouring counties, incomplete projects to pure theft of funds; Nyamira County stands out as a good example of a bad example.
As a defender of the electorate in Nyamira, I will soon embark on concerted efforts of fighting corruption in Nyamira through the DCI although there are pending matters pertaining to Nyamira which have taken long to be addressed.
There are pending cases touching on Nyamira with the ethics and anti-corruption offices which should be prosecuted immediately.
Current Nyamira County Senator Okong’o Omogeni should wake up from the deep slumber he has been in one year down the road and join us in dealing with the cancer of corruption in Nyamira.
For Nyagarama though, as he serves his second and last term; he should leave a positive legacy in Nyamira, but this seems far-fetched. Nevertheless, with four more years, he can transform the county.
Further, with the handshake tide sweeping across the country, Raila Odinga must be accountable for all counties allied to ODM by virtue of being led by a governor elected on the party’s ticket.
Raila must clean the mess in those counties before joining President Uhuru in the national government for the same fight.
