The hospital now becomes the second public health facility in the country after the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) in Nairobi to perform open heart surgeries.

Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer Dr Wilson Aruasa told the press in Eldoret town on Wednesday that they had already performed 7 successful surgeries, with one of the patients already discharged.

Dr Aruasa further said the surgeries will now be performed on a regular basis at the hospital that serves the entire North Rift region, parts of western Kenya as well as neighbouring Uganda and South Sudan.

"We are happy to report that the surgeries will now be conducted at the facility regularly thus patients will no longer have to travel to get the same services in Nairobi or abroad," he said.

Patients requiring open heart surgeries from the region have been travelling to either KNH, Mater, Tenwek or Karen hospitals but can now get the services in Eldoret.

According to Dr Aruasa, it costs much cheaper for a patient to be operated in at the facility.

"The surgery costs between Sh800,000 to Sh1 million compared to Sh1.2 million charged by private hospitals. NHIF will also pay Sh500, 000," noted the MTRH boss.
