Former Kilifi Deputy Governor Kennedy Kamto is dead. Unknown gunmen shot the politician while he was entering his Nyali residence on Wednesday morning.
His body is at Pandya Memorial Hospital mortuary.
Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki confirmed the incident but denied giving more details surrounding the shooting saying that investigations are underway.
However, Coast Regional Police Commander Noah Mwivanda narrated how the crime transpired. He said that three gunmen attacked Kamto while he was entering his home.
“The former Kilifi deputy governor this morning at 4:45am when he was entering his home in Nyali was accosted by three gunmen who had their faces covered,” Mwivanda said as reported by Nation.The Police Commander said that his officers from Nyali Police Station responded within 15 minutes. Unfortunately, they found Kamto dead.“In the ensuing confrontation, one of the gunmen shot him three times injuring him fatally,” Mwivanda added.He added that they suspect the gangsters had trailed the former DG before striking. They vanished without taking anything from Kamto but took Sh6,000 from a guard.Kennedy Kamto deputised former Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro in his gubernatorial race in 2017. The duo defected from Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) but lost to incumbent Amason Kingi.Kamto defected with several other ODM members in February 2017. ODM NEC member Grace Mboja, Dan Chome, Ken Nyale and Kenga Mupe were other leaders who defected with him.
