As festive season comes to the climax, entertainment joints, clubs, social places and health facilities within Eldoret town have been hit by the scarcity of condoms.
This is exposing locals in the Uasin Gishu's capital to sexually transmitted diseases among them HIV/AIDS.
According to some of the locals who spoke to hivisasa.com, the government-issued commodity is no longer in supply.
Christine Atieno, an accommodation attendant in Eldoret says currently the red condoms supplied by the government to the health facilities are limited.
They normally collect from local health centres.
“We no longer have condoms for our clients that we used to provide for them. They now have to purchase for themselves from the chemist,” the attendant said adding that some of their clients are now forced to engage in unprotected sex which may lead to them contracting STDs.
A sex worker in Eldoret who sought anonymity further said that they are now forcing their clients to buy condoms since it’s more expensive for them to purchase it.
She also claimed that drunk men at some point force them into the act without using protection.
“Buying condoms is expensive, even some that are sold locally may not be of the required quality. Some men are afraid of ordering condoms in the chemist, they prefer picking them in the boxes installed in sanitary rooms on their own,” she said faulting men for depending on sex workers to carry condoms for them.
