Mt Kenya region, traditionally, is known for its block voting patterns.
However, 2022 may play out differently in the region that has produced three presidents since Independence.
That Deputy President William Ruto who is looking forward to succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta should never expect to receive a block vote in the region that suffered one of the heaviest brunts of colonialism.
Although Ruto expects to get full support in Central Kenya- going by the pact he signed with Uhuru back in 2013, there is a likelihood that votes here will be divided between Ruto and whoever will be his greatest challenger during the poll.
There is still believe among people in Central that Ruto played a pivotal role in the 2007 Post-Election Violence in which members of the Kikuyu community were evicted from Rift Valley where Ruto comes from.
This fact can best be illustrated by the recent visits by high profile politicians from Central to opposition leader Raila Odinga's Capitol Hill office in Nairobi. And more importantly, there are claims that the 2010 Constitution may be amended before 2022 and the reason for this is to allow Raila vie for the Presidency.
If Uhuru is keen on ensuring Ruto succeeds him, why are visits by politicians to Capitol Hill- Central Kenya inclusive- on the rise?
Ruto enjoys massive support in some parts of Central, but this may not guarantee him a block vote from the mountain in 2022.
