According to various 2018 reports including those of Jumia Business Intelligence and GSMA Mobile, over 60 per cent of the Kenyan population own a smartphone today.
The growth is mainly attributed to the ever-expanding market for affordable phones flowing into the country.
As the number of smartphones keeps on increasing, cases of phone theft too increase with several Kenyans losing their valuable gadgets on daily basis.
So what are you supposed to do when your phone gets lost or stolen? Most Kenyans would on many occasions let it go and buy a new one which is wrong.
So here is what you ought to do, report it to the nearest police station, yes I mean it, report. This is a true story about me that should serve as a learning lesson for you.
Two months ago I lost my bag that had IDs, ATM and phone. I reported the case at the Eldoret police station and applied for another ID, notified the bank to disable the ATM.
The thugs used the ID to register a Safaricom line and M-Pesa. The line was then used to steal money from an M-Pesa agent in Eldoret amounting to Sh67,000.
On investigations, the bank's anti-fraud and CID officers pounced on me at 3 am on July 21, 2018.
To shorten my story, it was that report I made at Eldoret police station that saved me from being charged and jailed. It's that OB number that saved me thank God I had made the right thing to report.
I now urged you to never ignore such cases but to report them to the police to save yourself in future if such crimes are committed using your credentials.
