The burial of the unborn baby of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno did not take place on Thursday as planned.
According to Sharon's mother, Melinda Auma, the function was postponed due to financial constraints but noted it will take place today (Friday) after the Homa Bay County Government pledged to offer assistance.
"The County Executive for Water, Dickson Nyawinda, requested us to postpone the burial to enable them organise themselves how to intervene with their aid," Auma told journalists on Thursday.
The seven-month-old foetus died after being stabbed by unknown criminals who also killed its mother last week.
Sharon's body was found dumped in a thicket near Oyugis town a day after she was kidnapped alongside Daily Nation journalist Barack Odour.
Auma said they decided to bury the foetus even before police unravel the mysterious murder due to the high cost associated with preservation of the body at the mortuary.
"We realised that the cost of preserving the foetus is higher than that of an adult body. That is why we decided to bury it," the would-be grandmother said.
The remains will be transported from Kirindo Hospital Mortuary in Mbita to Magare village, Homa Bay County where the burial will take place.
The family, however, has vowed not to bury Sharon until her killers are arrested and punished for the murder.
"Going by the report on how she was murdered, we have agreed that the only way the family can know peace again is when suspects are brought to trial as they lay Sharon to rest," said Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, the family lawyer.
Before her brutal murder, Sharon had confided to her parents that Migori Governor Okoth Obado was the father of her unborn baby.
Obado has confirmed that the varsity student was his lover but denied accusations that he was behind her killing.
