The Kenya Universities Staff Union's-KUSU National Governing Council has called for the immediate resignation of Maasai Mara University Council following the allegations of the heist at the University.
Addressing media in Nakuru on Saturday, KUSU's Governing Council members led by Secretary-General Dr Charles Mukhwaya said they have reviewed management challenges facing Maasai Mara University among other public Universities and action needs to be taken.
The KUSU National Governing Council lauding the government for moving with speed to address the allegations of the heist at Maasai Mara University and the removal of former Vice-Chancellor Prof.Mary Walingo to allow investigations.
However, the Union noted that with the continued stay of Maasai Mara University Council will render any efforts to investigate the heist nugatory, irrelevant and inconsequential.
KUSU also revealed that its members at Maasai Mara University are now being intimidated over any volunteering of information around financial and human resources impropriety.
"We call for the immediate resignation of all Maasai Mara University Council members. This will give staff with damning evidence confidence to feel secure enough to come forth and provide information to the investigating agencies," said Mukhwaya.
According to KUSU, if the Maasai Mara University Council members will not resign then the government should compel them to do so for failing to play its oversight role at the University.
Meanwhile, KUSU has also appealed to government to widen its investigations to other public universities.
The Kenya Universities Staff Union say they have documented reports on the plunder of public resources in various Universities in the country among them Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology-MMUST and the University of Embu.
"This is not the first time we are raising such. The Union has been raising issues of governance facing Universities in this country and documented reports are with the relevant authorities. We feel it is time that the Government widens its investigations to other public universities," said Mukhwaya.
Similar sentiments echoed by KUSU's National Organizing Secretary Wayaya Ernest.
Wayaya says the government should not just sit and watch as public resources are being messed up by a few individuals at the Universities.
Disquiet hit the Maasai Mara University in Narok County following an expose by Citizen TV on the looting of public coffers at the institution.
The special investigative piece dubbed "The Mara Heist" that aired in the 7 and 9pm bulletins put the university's management on the spot over allegation of misappropriation of Sh190 million over a period of time.
This saw former Vice-Chancellor Prof.Mary Walingo removed and investigations launched.
