Anyone can get infected with HIV and on the same note anyone can protect himself or herself from getting infected by the dangerous virus.
Other than the use of condoms during sexual intercourse, there are several other ways through which you can protect yourself from HIV infection;
1. Get tested and know your partner's status.
For those in new relationships, the first step to make is to get yourself tested and ensure your partner does the same before you begin engaging in sexual activities.
Do not jump into raw sex with someone whose health status in relation to HIV is not known to you.
2. Limit your sexual partners
The more the sexual partners you have, the higher your risk of attracting HIV.
Therefore you should do yourself a favor and limit your sexual partners to one who is trusted. You could also contract Sexually Transmitted Diseases(STDs) by having several sexual partners.
STDs expose you to HIV.
3. Learn about PrEP
Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis(PrEP) is an option for HIV negative people who are at a higher risk of getting infected.
It involves taking a HIV drug on daily basis for prevention and not treatment purposes.
4. Consider male circumcision
There is evidence that male circumcision reduces the chances of acquiring HIV for the males who are exposed to HIV positive women.
5. Use sterile needles for those who take drugs intravenously.Intravenous drug users who inject themselves in groups should ensure they use sterile needles.
People visiting hospitals should also ensure the doctors use sterile needles or any other sharp objects on them especially during surgeries.
