Moi University students who were affected by the tragic inferno at Serene residence can now breathe a sigh of relief after the university stepped in to offer help.
This comes after their plight was highlighted by Hivisasa.
Charles Wao, a representative of the affected students, said the victims were issued with eight bed spaces at the campus hostels, bed sheets and blankets.
“The students were given accommodation and food. Some of them were also given beddings since they had lost everything,” said Wao in an exclusive interview.
The varsity's administration stepped in to help out after the fire destroyed 12 rooms, with some of the students losing all their belongings.
The dean of students held a meeting with the victims a day after the incident and assured them of the university's support. The students were later allowed to eat at the school's mess for free.
“Some of us lost everything in the fire. It was therefore quite relieving when the school stepped in to give us accommodation. I was given a bed space at hostel M and also a free pass to eat at the mess. We were also promised some financial help which we are still waiting for,” said Hillary Aiyoyi, a victim of the fire.
The fire was caused by an electric fault in one of the rooms. Students have been urged to exercise caution so as to avoid such accidents.
