Property of unknown value was destroyed after a Thursday night fire gutted down one of the dormitories at the Ambira Boys High School, in Ugunja Constituency, Siaya County.
The dormitory housed 130 students.
Ugunja sub-county Director of Education Guto Obed said that the fire was discovered by some students who had gone to the pit latrine before they raised an alarm at around 8.30 pm.
"Students were attending their evening preps by the time the fire was discovered.
"The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault given that there was an on and off power surge around that time,” said Mr. Obed.
The Education official said that nothing was salvaged in the incident, despite students and members of the public putting up a spirited fight to contain the fire.
He confirmed that no one was injured.
Meanwhile, Maliera Boys High School in Gem Constituency, Siaya County has been closed indefinitely.
The School was closed on Thursday, after students allegedly attempted to set buildings on fire.
Maliera Boys becomes the latest School in Nyanza to be closed indefinitely this week, due to students’ unrest.
Kisumu Girls, Ng’iya Girls, and Maranda Boys are some of the schools that have been closed so far.
