Migori Governor Okoth Obado could soon be facing a second murder charge after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji indicated that he might be charged with the murder of Sharon Otieno’s seven-month foetus.
On Tuesday, Governor Obado was charged with the murder of his lover, Rongo University student Sharon Otieno.
During the case hearing, State Prosecutor Alexander Muteti told the court that the DPP would at some point bring more charges against the governor.
Prosecutor Muteti told the court that the DPP will seek to amend the charge sheet to include the murder of Sharon’s foetus.
The prosecutor said that according to the constitution, life begins at conception and, therefore, the governor should be charged with the alleged murder of the seven-month foetus.
“We are not only talking about Sharon but also her unborn baby and when the right time comes, we will seek to amend the charge sheet to bring more charges against the governor. It was the kind of gruesome murder that shakes the conscience of any man,” said Mr Muteti.
Postmortem examination on Sharon’s body indicated that she had succumbed to excessive bleeding after being stabbed several times.
Obado’s lawyers, Nicholas Ombija, Cliff Ombeta and Rodgers Sagana during the Tuesday hearing filed an application to have the governor released on bail pending the next case hearing.
An investigation officer asked the court to detain the governor saying he could inter with the ongoing investigations or intimidate key prosecution witnesses if released on bail.
The governor, however, pleaded with the court to release him on grounds that he is not a flight risk and that he shall not interfere with any witnesses or the ongoing investigations.
Justice Jessie Lesiit ordered that the governor is remanded at Industrial Area Remand Prison for another two nights pending determination of his bail application.
The case will be mentioned on September 27 for the ruling.
