Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement party leadership believes Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya will succeed at the helm of Council of Governors's top management.
The second term ODM governor who also doubles as the party's deputy leader, was unanimously elected on Monday after beating five others in elections whose outcome was anxiously waited by Kenyans.
And Oparanya managed to edge out Peter Nyong'o (Kisumu), Salim Mvurya (Kwale), Ann Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu) and Turkana's Josephat Nanok who is the immediate outgoing chair.
"We congratulate our Deputy Party Leader H.E. @GovWOparanya the Governor of Kakamega County on his election as chairman of Council of Governors.
"We are confident that he will discharge his duties diligently & push for the strengthening of Devolution which is one of our pillars." https://twitter.com/TheODMparty/status/1084803122185334784?s=19.
This is the second time and opposition governor is taking charge of the council given that Josephat Nanok is a member of the ODM party.
Former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto served as the pioneer chairman before handing over to Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya in 2016.
Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria will deputise Mr Oparanya after being elected as Vice Chair. He takes over from Kirinyaga's Ann Waiguru.
