Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter has sensationally claimed the government is broke.
The outspoken Jubilee MP said President Uhuru Kenyatta-led administration was in financial crisis since all the revenue collected was being used to repay both domestic and foreign loans.
In a controversial post on his official Twitter account, Keter noted the much hyped development projects in the counties will remain a pipe dream because there was no funds to implement them.
"Kenya is now officially broke. We collected 1.6 Trillion this financial year which is just enough to pay foreign and local debts of over a trillion and the balance to sort out salaries, allowances and recurrent expenditure. There is no money for county governments and development," the legislator tweeted on Thursday.
However, National Treasury and Planning Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich has maintained that the government will not abandon any project despite experiencing infrastructure deficit.
"Going forward, we have come up with a unit at the National Treasury for Public Investment management. This will ensure effective coordination in the project cycle," Rotich said.
In an interview with Sunday Nation, the CS further dismissed media reports that Kenya was staring at financial meltdown due to increasing foreign debt.
"As we have indicated before, our public debt remains sustainable. As at the end December 2018, Kenya’s public debt in nominal terms was equivalent to 52 per cent of GDP, of which half is foreign debt," Rotich noted.
