Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Thursday came out to give his stand on the ban that saw Matatus denied access into the Central Business District (CBD) on Monday.
Speaking during the graduation of the KCB Foundation 2jiajiri Youth Empowerment Program, Class of 2018 on Thursday at Kasarani Gymnasium in Nairobi, Sonko told Nairobians to get ready to walk again.
He declared that as long as he is the Nairobi governor, he will not leave the city the way he found it.
“I’d rather be a one-term governor than leave Nairobi city the way I found it. Let us be unpopular now but we make the right decisions which at times can be very painful,” said Sonko.
Describing the Monday Matatu CBD ban as a necessary drill, Sonko argued residents to exercise by walking as its only 1 kilometre from Railways or from Muthurwa to CBD.
“Walking is exercise and you will still walk again. Even in Rwanda, President Kagame is making people exercise,” he said.
He also noted that banning Matatus from the CBD is not to hurt anyone or deny people employment opportunities, but to make sure that the Matatu congestion issues in Nairobi are addressed.
