Kalonzo argues that it is not the right time to amend the constitution.

He instead proposes for the strengthening of already existing constitutional offices in order to address issues facing the country.

The former Vice President notes that it is not wise to have some constitutional positions scrapped out.

He argues that scrapping certain political seats is likely to create a political vacuum and more divisions in the country.

“It is not wise to review the constitution now. I suggest we push for the strengthening of constitutional offices in order to solve the issues we are facing,” Kalonzo said.

The former Vice President claims that the calls for constitutional referendum are not genuine.

While agreeing that the country faces serious challenges, Kalonzo wants reforms carried out without necessarily amending the constitution.

Kalonzo says electoral reforms are key to future fair and transparent general election.

A section of politicians is pushing for a constitutional review with an aim of scrapping out some elective positions.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is among the top leaders advocating for a referendum.

Deputy President William Ruto, Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi and Garissa Township MP Aden Duale are on the other hand among leaders opposed to the referendum.

On Saturday last week, Duale hit out at Raila accusing him of lying to Kenyans that the government has agreed to amend the 2010 constitution.
