Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has proposed the County Funding Allocation Formula's review.
Ngilu argues that the current formula used to allocate funds to counties is discriminatory and defective.
According to Ngilu, population and size should be the main factors for allocation to counties.
Speaking in Kitui Town on Wednesday, the governor said it is unfair for counties with a higher population to share equal revenue with those that have low population and size.
“It is unfair for a county with 1 million people to get an equal share with a county that has 500, 000 people,” Ngilu said.
Ngilu who spoke during a forum on Building Bridges asked the committee co-chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji and his Busia counterpart Amos Wako to push for the allocation of more funds to counties.
She said the current 15 percent funds allocation to counties is not enough.
Ngilu has proposed 45 percent allocation to county governments.
She said the allocation will enable counties to spearhead key development projects.
“The current funding allocation is not enough and it is mostly used in paying salaries and wages,” she said.
Ngilu said devolution will only benefit Kenyans if more funds are allocated to counties.
