Ever wondered why some women eat soil while pregnant? Well, it is a dime a dozen among most of them.
It is believed that when they eat soil, they increase their appetites and obtain some calcium nutrients from it. This sounds odd.
Forget about reviving their appetites, eating the soil has devastating consequences not only to the mum but also the fetus. Soil can take a toll in their body by causing numerous infections.
“Excessive consumption of soil can lead to a blockage of the intestines, which would need surgery as the soil would have blocked food from passing. People who consume a lot of soil may also face acute challenges in bowel movements.
"People who eat soil are just dicing with death. One may not feel the consequences immediately but in the long run, the results are dire,” says Dr Ngwenya.
Here are other effects of eating soil
1. Interferes with absorption
Eating soil is a bad idea simply because it corrodes the stomach and intestines hence barring the smooth absorption of food nutrients into the bloodstream.
This often results in deficiencies of some nutrients that can be dangerous. You unborn child may also suffer from the same condition.
2. Causes constipation
This is another major cause of concern. Soil afflicts the intestine.
It is reported that clay soil is packed with kaolin that are not only perilous in nature but also interferes with the wellbeing of a pregnant woman. This component is believed to cause constipation.
3. Dysentery
It is a disease characterised by inflammation of the colon, accompanied by fever and pain in the abdomen. It is caused by eating too much soil while pregnant.
