On Wednesday, a source from DCI intimated that Mrs. Hellen Obado had been asked to record a statement, a decision that was rescinded later.

This comes after it was established that his husband, Okoth Obado, was the father of slain student Sharon Otieno's unborn baby.

And the new twist now requires both Obado and his wife to jointly record a statement in connection to the gruesome murder.

Last week, Mr. Obado recorded a statement with DCI in Kisumu aand even though he conceded having had a relationship with Ms. Otieno, he denied having played a role in her death.

Sources from within the detectives also reveals that a relative to Mrs Obado, who is an ex-police officer, has been summoned for interrogation.

Five people among them Michael Oyamo, a PA to Obado and a bodyguard Elvis Omondi have been detained by detectives.

Police are also probing a mysterious trip by Ms. Otieno and journalist Barack Oduor to Nairobi, a week to their abduction.

"We have obtained the boarding passes they used to travel from Kisumu International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi on August 24 and are investigating whom they met in the city and whether the meeting had any connection to the subsequent incidences," a source privy to the ongoing probe said.

"From our preliminary investigations, the plan to execute the duo could have begun much earlier and they may have been lured to the City. However, the deal seemed to have flopped and the plot changed."

The two travelled from Kisumu to Nairobi on August 24 aboard Fly 540, flight number 5H0408. The trip is said to had been organised by Mr  Michael Oyamo.

A vehicle reportedly used by the kidnappers has also been impounded by the police.
