The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) now says that Migori Governor Okoth Obado is linked to the murder of slain Rongo University student, Sharon Otieno.
The detectives from DCI have established this after an in-depth probe into her gruesome murder a fortnight ago.
Sources at DCI told the Standard that Obado's mobile phone was traced to Homa Bay County on the day of Sharon's death, contrary to his earlier claims that he was in Nairobi.
According to the sources, the detectives have further established that there was mobile phone communication between the Obado and some of the suspects already in custody for the murder of the second-year Medical Records student.
These include his aides Michael Oyamo and Caspal Obiero who remain detained on court orders, pending further investigations.
Obado was arrested after a grilling session with the detectives in Nairobi on Friday and is being held at the Gigiri Police Station pending arraignment in court on Monday.
This becomes his second time to record a statement since the killing occurred, the first one done in Kisumu taking almost the entire day.
He has, however, disassociated himself with the murder, despite admitting that he was indeed in a romantic relationship with the deceased, a confession that is also being used against him.
"I want to state here clearly that I have absolutely nothing to do with the cruel death of Sharon. I want to urge all the agencies that are mandated with investigations to speed up their work so that the real killers can be brought to book,” he said in an earlier press conference as further quoted by the Standard.
If found guilty, the county chief could be sent to hang, in line with the constitution.
Sharon's body was found dumped at Kodera forest in Oyugis, Homa Bay County two weeks ago, after reportedly being abducted in Rongo, Migori, two days before.
She was seven months expectant at the time, with tests confirming that Obado fathered the unborn child.
