A section of women leaders from Gusii region have appealed to Interior Cabinet Secretary to ensure culprits caught forcing young girls to undergo outlawed Female Genital Mutilation exercise are apprehended and subjected to prosecution.
The leaders led by former Nyamira County MP Alice Chae said FGM offenders should not be spared.
"I am calling upon women in deep villages to stop forcing girls to undergo the illegal exercise. Police must work closely with local chiefs and Nyumba Kumi officials to nab FGM offenders," she noted.
The vocal ex-lawmaker insisted FGM is commonly practiced in long December holiday in the larger Gusii region.
"Women leaders must come up to defend the rights of young girls. Matiang'i after ending exam cheating he should intensify crackdown on FGM culprits," she added.
Rachael Otundo, a Kisii based politician urged chief to be vigilant to curb FGM on young girls.
"Chiefs must be able to identify people more so women forcing young girls to undergo the outlawed practice in their respective areas of jurisdiction," said Mrs. Otundo.
Martha Makori urged Nyamira residents both men and women to fight the vice.
