Doctor Robin Luddecke from University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel with his collogues sought to confirm their speculation about the effect of tight neckties on cerebral blood flow. They had suggested that tightening this attire compresses the jugular venous flow.

They sampled 30 young men in good health condition that never had documented cerebrovascular diseases. The sample was then divided into two groups consisting of 15 men each. One group did not wear neckties while the other did.

The groups received MRI baseline scans under different tie tightness. The researchers then measured cerebral blood flow (CBF) then the jugular vein venous flow measured.

The finding revealed that the necktie group had a reduction in cerebral blood flow of up to 12.8% when the ties were tightened.

The research found out that the decline was not fatal because it fell within physiological limits. However, the necktie is a potential hazard if the quantity of blood that is cut off from reaching your brain is significant to affect normal functions.
