Barely a week after suspected cholera cases were reported at Nairobi's Kenyatta National Hospital, Nyeri County Government has issued an urgent cholera outbreak alert.
The concern follows reported cases of the epidemic in Nairobi, Garissa, Machakos and Kajiado counties.
Nyeri County Executive Committee (CeC) member in charge of Health Dr Rachel Kamau revealed that the alert was due to frequent interactions between Nyeri and Nairobi where several cases have been reported.
Reports by the Kenya News Agency (KNA) indicate that Dr Kamau affirmed that there were higher chances of an outbreak and so is the need to take precautionary measures.
The CeC has since banned food hawking and cautioned residents to desist from visiting roadside eateries.
In addition, he has directed that all active food outlets be re-inspected to assure conformity with the Public Health Act.
Amid the developments, health personnel across the county have also been placed on high alert and called to heighten surveillance activities for swift response.
“Any suspected cholera case must be reported to the office of the County Director of Health for further investigations and immediate response,” Dr Kamau directed as quoted by KNA.
