During his heydays, former Rangwe MP Ouma Muga who died three days ago, was a political tsunami in Nyanza. And with retired President Daniel Arap Moi's ear, the lawmaker was destined to political greatness. But it was not to be.
After a fallout with Moi, the lawmaker jumped ship and joined Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's Ford Kenya party. He managed to bounce back as he recaptured his seat in 1992. However, worse was to follow.
After the death of Jaramogi in 1994, Ford Kenya was embroiled in leadership wrangles with simmering differences between his successor Wamalwa Kijana and his son Raila Odinga threatening to split the party.
It was at this time that Prof. Muga sided with Wamalwa to defeat the ambitious Raila who would later resign as an MP to form his own new party, National Development Party (NDP). However, the move would later cost him dearly as he was toppled from his seat.
The new party would later go on to take over Nyanza region. And during the 1997 general election, top politicians from the region were sent home including Prof. Muga who lost to newcomer, Shem Ochuodho, never to recover again.
