Aldai Member of Parliament Cornel Serem has defended Deputy President William Ruto over questions on his donations to churches across the country.
Ruto has been the topic of discussion lately, with leaders and critics questioning his source of income, hence the ability to spend millions of shillings on donations and offerings every weekend.
But speaking on Radio Citizen’s ‘Debe La Citizen’ Sunday evening, Serem said that the DP should not be condemned for giving, acknowledging that he is rich and able to give.
He noted that the issue has taken a political turn, and is being used to sabotage his 2022 presidential bid, wondering why such questions were not raised against retired President Daniel Moi who gave much more.
''He is not very rich and can land in the list of the first or second thousand richest people in Kenya. There are many more rich people who are, however, not so generous,’’ he said.
He, therefore, urged those raising questions about his income sources and associating him with illegal dealings to challenge him in court.
Leading the pack has been opposition leader Raila Odinga who on June 18 openly urged Ruto to come clear on his income sources.
The remarks that have been met with condemnations from the ruling Jubilee Party leaders, who told the Orange party leader to keep off Ruto's issues.
