Lieutenant General Walter Raria took over as Army Commander on Saturday from Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi who has been appointed new Vice Chief of Defence Forces replacing Lieutenant General Joseph Kasaon who has resigned on medical grounds.

KDF reported the changes on Saturday saying Raria's take over of the Kenya Army was because of his dedication towards improving service delivery in the military, adding that his seniority at work earned him the promotion.

"The Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lieutenant General Robert Kibochi has handed over command of the Kenya Army to Lieutenant General Walter Raria. Lieutenant General Raria, who is now the 21st Commander of the Kenya Army, served as the Deputy Army Commander for the past two years under the stewardship of the Vice Chief Defence Forces," KDF said in a brief statement posted on its Twitter account.

On July 28, the military reported that President Uhuru Kenyatta had accepted Kasaon's resignation on medical grounds.

Kibochi was promoted in preparation for him to take over from the current Chief of Defence Forces General Samsom Mwathethe.

The KDF top office's service is rotational and it is the turn of the Kenya Army to lead when Mwathethe retires.

Mwathethe who is expected to depart was from the Kenya Navy before he took over from General Michael Karangi at the peak of the KDF.
