Finally, a group of close confidants of founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga have given details of his last moments.
According to Dimba Jakobuya, his aide, the father of opposition died at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu.
This was only hours before his scheduled meeting with Ugandan Predident Yoweri Museveni in Kampala, Uganda.
The latter's health began deteriorating the same week he died and had been on medication prescribed and supervised by his personal doctor Dr Odhiambo Olel.
A day to his death, he had just arrived at the Kisumu Airport from Nairobi before proceeding to his home in Milimani, with Jakobuya by his side.
However, he began worsening at the port and openly showed problems in walking and was also very tired, recounts Jakobuya.
"He was tired and I had to help him board the plane. Those who saw him when we landed at the Kisumu airport noticed he had difficulty walking,” he told the Sunday Standard.
The next day , the then Bondo lawmaker developed breathing difficulties and Dr Olel was once again called in.
He proposed that the former freedom fighter be rushed to the Aga Khan Hospital in the same town.
However, though he managed to get to the hospital, the medics could not save him, throwing the nation into mourning.
“The following day, on January 20, I called Dr Olel when Jaramogi started developing breathing difficulties. He arrived within minutes and recommended that we rush Mzee to Aga Khan Hospital,” Jakobuya said.
This was on January 20, 1994.
The body was then moved to the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi aboard a Kenya Airforce jet that evening.
