The six are Mohammed Makokha, Peter Ameche, Juma Sichenyi, Dismas Mukoya, Adam Were and Augustine Juma who were arraigned before Kakamega Senior Magistrate William Leopokoyit.

In his ruling, Justice Leokopoyit found the group with no case to answer due to lack of evidence and ordered for their immediate release from police custody.

So far, only one suspect, Kassim Chitechi, has been charged before a court over claims of killing Petronilla Mungayi and her three-year-old daughter Shirleen Okhasia in Shangaywe village.

The accused denied the charges before Justice Jesse Njagi on Tuesday and was released on a Sh500, 000 bond with the case set to be heard on October 22, 2019.

The prosecution is also holding eight other suspects after obtaining court orders to detain them to allow police to conduct investigations after they were linked to murders.

Top political figures in the county, including Senator Cleopa Malala and former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa were also arrested over the killings but have since been released.

The government has deployed General Service Unit (GSU) officers to suppress the gangs which have been terrorising residents.
