The University of Eldoret (UOE) students and residents residing in Sogomo, a market next to the institution, had a very long and crazy night on Wednesday.
This is after the students opted to take to the road, burning tires in complain of what they claim was harassment by the police officers.
Due to insecurity menace around the Chepkoilel-based institution, the Kapsoya police officers have been conducting security measures that have not gone well with some of the comrades.
It was a night of tear gas and running battles between the comrades and the police. Nobody was safe, including the non-student residents, as the police threw teargas canisters everywhere that spread even into rooms of innocent students and residents.
The blanket was not safe either and most of the students staying in self-contained rooms spent that night in the bathroom washing their faces. Others had it rough especially if you had no water in your room. Inside was hot but outside was hotter and you could risk spending a night behind bars.
The police were finally able to manage the situation and the unlucky students spent the night in the cold cells of Kapsoya Police Station.
This demonstration comes when the institution is set to conduct the 6th graduation ceremony on Friday. Additionally, the continuing students are expected to start their semester examinations the following week.
