ODM Deputy Party Leader Hassan Ali Joho had been scheduled to lead the party at the venue in Kinango town.

"The officers arrived in three Land Rovers. They warned us against being at the venue. They said the meeting was illegal and started clobbering us making most of us scamper for safety," said one of the male supporters.

Accompanied by his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, Joho arrived at the venue about five minutes after the chaos.

According to Joho's personal assistant Idris Abdirahman, police said the meeting had not been authorised and that the ground was to be used for a public baraza, claims Benjamin Tayari, who was by then, ODM's Kinango MP aspirant, dismissed.

"I took the notification to police on Friday and they acknowledged receiving it. We were in the final stages of preparations. Some supporters had already settled when the officers descended on us. They used their sirens to scare us from the venue,” Tayari said.

Joho later issued a statement criticizing the Jubilee government over the incident.
