Thirdway Alliance of Kenya party leader Ekuro Aukot and his team on Thursday took the 'Punguza Mzigo' campaigns to Nakuru County.
Speaking in Nakuru town, Aukot said since the launch of the initiative, they have managed to gather 616,800 signatures, adding that they only need 400,000 more signatures to meet the target requirement of one million signatures.
Aukot noted that Kenyans have embraced the campaign that is targeting to reduce the burden of overrepresentation through a referendum to amend the Constitution.
“So far we have gathered 616,800 signatures with only 400,000 signatures remaining to meet the target requirement of one million signatures. Kenyans have embraced the 'Punguza Mzigo' campaign which seeks to reduce overrepresentation,” said Aukot.
On matters corruption, the self-declared official opposition leader questioned the manner in which graft cases are being handled in the country.
While citing instances where those adversely mentioned in corruption scandals are appointed to top government positions, Aukot stated that there should be no room for such individuals to hold public office.
“Why do we have people who have been mentioned in corruption scandals appointed in government? There should be no room for such, if they are found guilty they should be jailed for life,” said Aukot.
His sentiments were echoed by Nakuru politician Joyce Leitich who argued that Kenyans are fed up with overrepresentation.
She called on Kenyans to join the campaign, noting that the referendum will provide a solution to the same.
The campaign is expected to climax in Eldoret over the weekend where Aukot will give a public talk at Moi University's School of Law.
