Here are the things you should expect to meet in the sitting room.

1. Gum boots

In my village in Kano Kamagaga, Kisumu county, gum boots are one of the basic necessities of life and whose presence in every family is a must thanks to the muddy terrain.

The funny part, however, is that they are usually left at a corner in the sitting and forgotten until the next time, though many houses are divided into two rooms.

The same is the case in most of the other regions.

2. Hens

Due to fear of thieves and wild cats otherwise known as 'Ogwang', in Luo, the birds are normally shepherded into the sitting room which at times doubles up as the sleeping place for children.

The children normally sleep on the floor, while the chicken occupy some corner in the house for fear that leaving the in a birdhouse outside might see them stolen or eaten by the cats.

3. Hoes

Most villagers have the tendency of leaving farm equipment in the living room.

The main culprit is normally the hoe 'Kwer', which is placed with the head of the hoe inserted between the roof and the highest part of the wall and the handle hanging down.

Machetes and others are also left scattered at the corner in most homesteads, unless they have a store which is hardly the case.
