Daniel Kihiu Mwambia and his wife Lydia Wanjiru have accused their house help, Mary Wambui Maina, of stealing their one-year-old baby from their home in Naromoru.

The couple said that the alleged theft of baby Gianah Muthoni Mwambia came barely a day after they hired the house help.

Mr Mwambia said that the decision to take in a new house help came after the resignation of their former maid who excused herself to go back home and continue with her education.

He told Citizen Digital that the suspect who was hired by his wife came to her new workplace on Friday, a day after the previous house help had left the job.

“On Saturday morning, I left for work at 6.30am and my wife left for Karatina market later on, leaving our two children in the company of the new help,’’ said Mr Mwambia.

At around 11:00 am, his wife received a call from neighbours who informed him that one of their kids had been spotted roaming in the compound, before establishing that the house help had fled with the one-year-old girl.

“We found that she had packed some of the child’s clothes but left her own. She also went away with the phone we had given her,” the distressed father said.

He added that the suspect’s father has since revealed that Maina has a mental disorder and a record of stealing from her employers but returns everything when she regains her sanity.

The incident was reported at the Naromoru Police Station, with the family now calling upon any citizen with any information that might lead to the recovery of the baby to report to the nearest police station.

In August this year, a house help in Githunguri, Kiambu had been accused of kidnapping her employer's baby.

However, it was later revealed that the two-year-old boy was involved in a custody battle, and had been taken by the dad.

The house help is reported to have 'saved' the child from the mum who had been accused of neglect, after receiving the instructions from the boy's father.
