The Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) has been urged to conduct proper investigations before cancelling exam results of candidates.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan, who was reacting to the cancellation of 2018 KCSE results for some schools in North Eastern, said those behind exam cheating should be held accountable instead of cancelling the results of an entire school.
Mr Keynan said relevant government agencies should be involved in determining individuals involved in examination irregularities.
The MP accused the examination council of punishing innocent students who have toiled for years.
He said supervisors, invigilators and school heads from the affected schools should be held accountable when malpractices occur.
“Before the government cancels the exams, proper investigations should be conducted by government agencies. The cancellation affects many students yet it may have been caused by an individual. Those involved are the ones who should been arraigned in court,” said the MP.
Mr Keynan further warned against the 'securitisation' of national exams adding that the exam body should find a better solution of dealing with exam cheating.
“Most of the students are scared. We need to change that because exam cheating is a moral issue. Let us also deal with the after-effects of this in a civilised manner,” he added.
In Garissa sub-county, the results of more than 200 candidates who sat 2018’s KCSE were cancelled and about 17 schools from the region were also cancelled.
