ODM leader Raila Odinga on Sunday returned to Kabarak, a year after making a similar trip to the home of retired President Daniel Moi, which caused political tension.
But on Sunday, Mr Odinga visited the octogenerian to condole with him in person following the death of Jonathan Moi, his eldest son. Jonathan was buried last Saturday in Kabimoi.
"Visited retired President Daniel Arap Moi at his Kabarak home to condole with him following the recent passing of his son Jonathan. We continue to wish strength to the former President and his family. May God grant them peace during this trying time," wrote Odinga.
At Kabarak, Mr Odinga was received by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, his wife Zahra Moi and Tiaty MP William Kamket. He signed visitors book before holding private talks with the retired president.
Moments after Jonathan's death, Raila was among national leaders to send his condolences. He described Jonathan as a hard-working Kenyan. However, he didn't join the family during burial since he had travelled to China with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"My family and that of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga send deeply-felt condolences to President Daniel arap Moi following the death of Jonathan Moi. We wish strength for the former President and his family to bear the loss. May God grant peace to the family at this sad moment," read his message.
Before Jonathan's burial, President Uhuru Kenyatta visited the retired president. Thereafter, former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Chief Justice David Maraga, COTU boss Francis Atwoli among other prominent leaders visited.
However, Deputy President William Ruto chose to visit Jonathan's home at Kabimoi, with a section of local media reporting that he had been turned away.
Dr Ruto's communication team through David Mugonyi refuted the claims. Days later, Ruto joined mourners in Kabarak during the burial. His rivalry with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi is said to have escalated to unexpected level, causing unending rift between the two.
For Raila, Sunday's trip comes amid blossoming relationship with Moi family, even after the former Head of State condemned him to detention without trial in 80s.
There have been claims that Mr Odinga is keen to form an alliance with the younger Moi in 2022 polls. Mr Gideon Moi has insisted that he will be on ballot in 2022.
