The year 2022 is not far and politicians are already racing against time in early campaigns.
If there is one contest that will gather dust during the coming polls, the Nairobi gubernatorial race will be it.
It is not yet clear whether incumbent Mike Sonko will defend his seat or not, but what is clearly emerging are the two people who will determine who will Nairobi City County's next chief.
1. Uhuru Kenyatta
In politics there is what is called the game of continuity. This is a situation where specific individuals fight tooth and nail to ensure incumbents retain their seats. During the August 8 general polls, Sonko sailed through to replace former Governor Evans Kidero on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Although Uhuru will be out of office in 2022, conventional wisdom dictates that he campaigns for Sonko or any other Jubilee candidate so that he continues to "rule" Nairobi.
He will be expected to play political cards at the forefront to ensure the party he leads retains the Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
2. Raila Odinga
The former Prime Minister has a huge following in Nairobi and going by the voting parterns of 2007, 2013 and 2017, the fomer Langata MP cannot be ruled out in determining who becomes Nairobi governor in 2022.
His party, the ODM, also has a huge following in the city.
Raila is a political schemer who is always out ensuring his party enjoys majority elective positions in the country.
Nairobi being the capital city, he will be expected to unleash all his arsenal as he tries to reclaim control of East and Central Africa's largest city after one of his point-men, Evans Kidero was voted out of office last year.
