Since time immemorial, Garissa County has been battling with the problem of drought that has given birth to tens of lifestyle diseases.

Among the many lifestyle issues destabilizing economic growth in the county is widespread miraa chewing.

A notable  percentage of the county's youthful populace engage in Miraa business that is a bitter sweet investment. Interestingly, the business is thriving, but doing less impact on economic growth.

In light of this, the relevant authorities should endeavour to ban this  destructive business in bid to restore the once booming Garissa economy.

However, this may sound quite impossible, especially to the addicted youths and other like-minded businessmen and women trading with the 'precious' commodity.

Just like sports gambling and alcohol addiction have destroyed many promising souls, this narcotic plant has completely swept over many otherwise productive youths.

Furthermore, miraa chewing has created a hopeless society dominated by single-parent families mostly supported by women.

In brief, the miraa-chewing cult is a disaster that needs an urgent intervention to save the face of the county. It is a must do this that calls for joint efforts from all arms of government.
