Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua has praised opposition leader Raila Odinga over his role in the quest for democracy in the country.
Speaking on Thursday, the county boss noted that Raila's involvement in the push against single-party democracy during the Nyayo era is laudable.
He also hailed the former premier and all the leading political figures for their leadership, admitting that they have done a good job.
"Kama sio Raila hatungekuwa na demokrasia hapa nchini. Alifungwa miaka tisa akipigania kuboresha siasa zetu. Yeye na hawa viongozi wengine wametuongoza vizuri na wamefanya kazi nzuri (were it not for Raila, we would not be having our current democracy, he was jailed for 9 years. Raila and all the other leaders have done a commendable job)," said Mutua.
He was speaking on Radio Citizen's Mjadala Wa Citizen Show on Thursday morning.
The county boss however stressed on the need for the group of leaders to consider exiting the political scene.
According to the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party leader, the nation needs a new set of leaders with fresh ideas to take over and lead the nation in a different and probably better direction.
"Hata hivyo, muda wao sasa umepita wasikatalie viti. Sisi vijana pia tuachiwe tuongoze sasa (it's our time now, let them accept that their time is over and not cling on leadership)," he added.
Mutua has also declared interest in the 2022 presidential race, a contest that might see him battle Raila and Deputy President William Ruto.
