Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has now come out to explain his remarks on the ongoing demolition of buildings.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview on Milele FM, Governor Waititu maintained that his proposal to have the rivers diverted is possible.
“Tunaweza jenga walls kupea mto mkondo, haina shida inawezekana kusongeza mto," he said.
In English, it loosely translates to: "We can build walls to redirect the rivers, it is not difficult. It is possible to move the rivers.”
The county boss on Sunday made headlines after he opposed the demolition of buildings built on riparian land in Nairobi, arguing that the move was hurting investors.
Speaking during a service at PCEA Musa Gitau Gikambura church in Kikuyu Constituency, the vocal governor called for the diversion of the rivers, adding that the building owners should be asked to cater for the costs.
“I do not support the issue of demolitions. If your building is close to a river, you should incur the costs of having the river moved a little further. But demolishing a building is not a solution, honestly speaking. It is such a big loss,” said Waititu.
Waititu further clarified that he still remains a Jubilee party supporter, despite opposing President Uhuru Kenyatta's directive to have the buildings demolished.
