But before that, he will spend the entire weekend in Gigiri Police Station, where he's being locked.

Detectives from HomiHomic squad arrested the governor and interrogated him for the better part of Friday at DCI headquarters in Nairobi.

"He recorded a statement and is now under arrest. He will spend the weekend behind the bars.

"They will charge him on Monday of murder of Sharon Otieno. We are ready to face them," Ombeta said.

Last week, Obado, who had recorded a statement at Kisumu, admitted having had a relationship with the slain student but dismissed being behind the murder.

In a press conference, Obado urged police to investigate the murder and charge the culprits.

"I have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with the murder. Police should investigate and charge those behind it."

His personal aides Michael Oyamo, Caspal Obiero, bodyguard Elvis Omondi and taxi driver Jackson Otieno are also being held as prime suspects.

DNA tests carried by detectives confirmed that Sharon was carrying the governor's baby and investigations have been narrowed to who wanted the mother and the baby dead.

Sharon's mother, Melida Auma, claimed that her daughter was under pressure from the governor to abort the pregnancy.
