Former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo has hit out at a section of Mt Kenya MPs over their alleged proposal to amend the Constitution to create a position for President Uhuru Kenyatta once his term ends in 2022.

Kabogo said that the MPs proposal is misplaced and aimed at tainting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy.

The former county boss further argued that the move could embarrass President Kenyatta, adding that the 2022 succession debate is likely to derail Jubilee's Big Four agenda.

“The president should be given time to deliver on his Big Four development agenda instead of being dragged into messy discussions,” he said in an interview with a local radio station on Wednesday.

Kabogo said that President Kenyatta is a man of his word and is not interested in extending his term in office.

“I can bet President Uhuru Kenyatta has no intention of retaining power after his term ends in 2022, take that to the bank,” he said.

This comes after a section of Mt Kenya MPs stated that President Kenyatta is too young to retire from politics.

President Kenyatta, however, dismissed the remarks, stating that he has no plans of extending his term beyond 2022.

"I am not interested. Even if such an offer comes, I will not take it. It's a no and I won't attempt to change my position," said Uhuru during his interview with CNN.
