North Kanyamkago Chief Milton Otieno said the body of Michael was found by residents who have pitched camp along the river following the tragedy.

"I received a call from a member of the search team that one body had been spotted floating in West Kansyamkago, two kilometres from where the tragedy occurred and I've informed the police about the same," he said.

Mr Otieno said the search team is working to recover the other missing body.

"We are upbeat that the other missing body will be recovered as they normally float three days after they go missing," he added.

The chief warned locals against rowing across the river during the rainy seasons, noting that the move could culminate to more disasters.

"I'm urging locals and especially visitors not to cross this river with makeshift boats. Let them use the long route and reach their destinations safely because we don't want to lose more lives," he said.

On Sunday, residents launched a search operation for the two men who drowned as they crossed River Kuja after a night vigil in the area.

Eyewitnesses recounted how the two had sought the service of a young boy to raw them ashore but the boy lost control of the boat and jumped leaving the two behind.
