A section of religious leaders in Uasin Gishu county has cautioned elected leaders against politicizing the Mau evictions.
Led by the county's Gospel Ministers Fellowship chairman Bishop Wilson Kurui, the clergy said it was wrong for the evictions t to be politicized as it might lead to divisions amongst communities living in the area.
“As religious leaders from this region, we don’t support leaders politicizing the Mau forest issue as it is a recipe for hate speech and chaos,” said Bishop Kurui in Eldoret town, Tuesday.
The clergy noted that land is a fragile issue that should not be discussed anyhow by politicians cautioning that reckless statements over the matter might lead to violence.
“Leaders visiting Mau residents should refrain from making inflammatory statements that might incite the people who have been living together peacefully for years,” he added.
The Jesus Love Ministries leader, however, asked the government to ensure the eviction process is done within the confines of the law and in consideration of locals human rights.
He said alternative resettlement place for the affected families should be identified before being evicted so as to avoid subjecting them to sufferings.
