The heavy rains being experienced in several parts of the country have come with its share of the negative effects among them floods in some parts of Nakuru Town.
The floods have disrupted transport operations as well as displacing other people. Some of the major roads affected are Kenyatta Avenue and Geoffrey Kamau Way.
Nakuru County government has responded to the flood headache by setting aside Sh150 million to deal with the problem, the Standards reports.
According to Nakuru County Executive for Lands, Housing and Physical Planning Frank Mwangi, the program is being funded under the Kenya Urban Support Programme and the tenders were advertised in February.
Mwangi states that the process of upgrading the drainage system will start in the next two weeks.
“The contractor is expected to begin the work in two weeks. The areas to be covered include the central business district, Kwa Murogi, Kipkelion and Kinuthia Mbugua road,” he told the Standard.
In the past week, rains from higher grounds have led to the destruction of over 100 homes in Nakuru, especially in Kiamunyi and Kaptembwo areas.
The Gioto dumpsite and the posh estates have been blamed for clogging based on their high position in the county.
