Police are investigating an incident where up to Sh1.6 million were stolen from a bank on Monday evening without robbers firing a single shot.
The money was stolen from Equity Bank, Karatina branch in Nyeri at around 7pm.
According to the bank’s management, the robbers accessed it through the front door and made away with the cash.
It was not clear how the robbers were able to enter the bank’s premises at a time when banking hours had closed.
According to a bank employee who cannot be named, employees of a bank are left behind every time a bank closes its working hours ‘to finalise on the day’s maths and balance everything’.
The incident comes weeks after the theft of millions from several of Barclays Bank’s ATMs in Nairobi.
Hackers were reported to have penetrated the systems of the bank and made it possible for the ATMs to dispense lots of cash.
Directorate of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti, however, said investigations were pointing to an inside job.
“They know exactly what happened. The outsiders were just there to facilitate the operation, after which they go and share the money, but this time we will reveal to the public what happened,” Kinoti said.
